The dataset summarizes observations from 1950 to 2021 from the territories of the Middle and South Urals, namely Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk Orenburg, Kurgan oblasts, the Republic of Bashkortostan, Perm Krai, Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug of the Russian Federation, and the Kostanay region of the Republic of Kazakhstan. At present time the database reads 248 records. The data was obtained from herbarium specimen labels. Each record is georeferenced. The collection is planned to be replenished before long.

The dataset contains records of small mammals (Eulipotyphla and Rodentia) collected on the background areas in the vicinity of the Karabash copper smelter (Southern Ural, Russia) and the territory of the Sultanovskoye deposit of copper-pyrite ores before the start of its development. Data were collected during the snowless period in 2007 (16 sampling points), 2008-2010 (13 points), 2011 (30 points), and 2012–2014 (19 points). The capture of animals was carried out in different types of forests (pine, birch, mixed and floodplain), sparse birch stand, swamp (reed, bogged), marshy and dry meadow, border areas, a dump of household waste, ruderal vegetation, and shift camp. Our studies of small mammals were conducted by trap lines (snap- and live-traps). During the study period, 710 specimens of small mammals were caught, which belong to 5 species of shrews and 13 species of rodents. The dataset can help study regional fauna, the species distribution in different habitats and be used as reference values for environmental monitoring and conservation activities. Information on plants belonging to the Limoniaceae family stored in the SVER Herbarium (Museum of Institute of Plant and Animal Ecology UB RAS) is presented. The samples have been collected over the past 100 years in Europe and mainly the Urals. The data was obtained from the labels of the SVER Herbarium, and information about each occurrence was linked to geographic coordinates with an approximate accuracy of 1 km. For each record there is an attached digital image of a herbarium specimen with label made in high resolution 600 dpi.

The dataset presents the results of an assessment of the species richness and frequency of vascular plants at the different elevation levels (from 1203 to 1348 m above sea level) and in the different biotopes (birch-spruce sparse forest, birch-spruce shrub forest, and spruce forest with fragments of meadow plant communities) in the Iremel mountain group (Southern Urals). Observations were carried out at 700 sampling plots using two estimation methods: small-size plot (0.5×0.5 m) sampling (672 plots in total) and large-size plot (10×10 m) sampling (28 plots). The dataset includes 700 sampling events (=sampling plots) corresponding to 5585 occurrences (vascular plants, identified mostly to species) and observed during July 2003. Only occurrences contained plant taxa (occurrenceStatus=present) have been provided. The dataset provides valuable information for estimating the biodiversity and composition of plant communities within the treeline ecotone, including the information about distribution and frequency of the Ural endemic species (Anemonastrum biarmiense (Juz.) Holub, Calamagrostis uralensis Litv., Cerastium krylovii Schischk. Et Gorczak., Festuca igoschiniae Tzvel., Hieracium iremelense (Elfstr.) Üksip, Lagotis uralensis Schischk, Pleurospermum uralense Hoffm.) and the Pleistocene relict species (Alopecurus glaucus Less., Bistorta vivipara (L.) Delarbre, Cerastium pauciflorum Stev. ex. The dataset includes information from a long-term monitoring program for two taxa of Annelids, Lumbricidae and Enchytraeidae, which dwell in the topsoil of spruce-fir, birch, pine, and floodplain forests in the Central Urals. The dataset includes information on the earthworm community structure (list of species, species abundance, number of egg cocoons, cocoon exuvia, juveniles, and adults) and inter-annual dynamics of earthworm and enchytraeid abundance. The dataset consists of 553 sampling events (= samples, corresponding to upper and lower layers of the soil monoliths) and 12 739 occurrences (earthworms, mainly identified to species, and earthworm cocoons and enchytraeids, identified to family) collected during 1990–2020. In total, 3 305 individuals of earthworms were collected, representing ten (out of twelve) species and all eight genera described for the fauna of the Central Urals. In addition, 7 292 earthworm egg cocoons and cocoon exuvia and 6 926 individuals of enchytraeids were accumulated. The presence-absence data on each of the ten earthworm species, egg cocoons, cocoon exuvia, and enchytraeids is provided for each sampling event. All data were collected in undisturbed non-polluted areas and are used as a local reference for ecotoxicological monitoring. The dataset provides valuable information for estimating the composition and abundance of earthworm communities in different habitats over a long time and contributes to the study of soil fauna biodiversity in the Urals.

The dataset includes the results of an assessment of the woody vegetation biomass at seven habitats (pine, birch, and floodplain forests, reed swamp, sparse birch stand, marshy meadow, and dump of household waste) of areas with different levels of industrial pollution in vicinities of the Karabash, the Southern Urals. Karabash Copper Smelter (KCS) is one of Russia’s most significant point polluters; the main components of its emissions are heavy metals, dust, and sulfur dioxide. Parameters of woody vegetation (diameter at breast height, diameter at root collar level, and biomass) were estimated for seven forest elements (forest stand, subcanopy, half-dead tree of a forest stand, and four types of coarse woody debris (downed bole, fragment of downed bole, standing dead tree, and stump)) at 41 sampling plots (20 at unpolluted and 21 at polluted areas) and 165 subplots (81 and 84 respectively). The dataset includes 411 sampling events (estimation events of the forest elements at sampling plots and subplots), corresponding to 5 786 occurrences (the woody vegetation components) observed during July 2012. For most woody vegetation components (72%), an estimate of the aboveground phytomass is given. For each sampling event, information on the presence or absence of woody vegetation species at the considered habitats is provided. The dataset can be used for environmental monitoring, sustainable forest management, modeling forest productivity considering global changes, studying the structure and biodiversity of forest cover, and assessing forests’ carbon-sequestration capacity. In addition, the dataset provides information about different forest ecosystems under the influence of strong industrial pollution.

The dataset describes protected species of the Carabidae family (Insecta, Coleoptera) stored in the entomological collection of the Museum of the Institute of Plant and Animal Ecology of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Museum of IPAE UB RAS) and included in the regional Red Data Books of administrative-territorial formations of the eastern slope of the Urals and Western Siberia (Yamalo-Nenets and Khanty-Mansi autonomous districts, Tyumen, Sverdlovsk, Kurgan and Chelyabinsk regions). We found that on the territory under consideration, 26 species are included in the latest editions of the regional Red Data Books; of these, there are 19 species in the Museum’s collection, numbering 2.248 specimens (= occurences in the dataset). In addition, we made recommendations for correcting the species lists of Carabidae: most of the ground beetle species are rightfully included in the regional Red Data Books. However, for several species, the status of protected is controversial. Perhaps Carabus canaliculatus, Carabus estreicheri, Carabus odoratus, Carabus regalis, Pterostichus kaninensis, Pterostichus urengaicus should be excluded from the regional Red Data Books of the Urals and Western Siberia since these are common species in these territories, whose habitats and populations do not have significant threats. We clarify that Carabus menetriesi needs protected status only on the eastern edge of the range, in the Tyumen region, and Carabus loschnikovi only in an isolated area of the range in the Sverdlovsk region (Denezhkin Kamen and Konzhakovsky Kamen mount massifs). We concluded that Carabus exaratus, Carabus hummeli, and Polystichus connexus are of the most significant interest in the collection of the Museum of IPAE UB RAS. These species have specimens found in isolated areas of their ranges; the publication of these data will make it possible to supplement the descriptions of the species in the compilation of subsequent editions of the regional Red Data Books.

The dataset presents the results of a long-term monitoring program for arachnids (Aranei and Opiliones) that inhabit meadow grass stand and forest litter in the Central and Southern Urals. The monitoring was carried out using permanent plots located in spruce-fir and aspen-birch forests and secondary dry meadows. All represented data were sampled in industrially undisturbed areas and could be used as a local reference. The dataset describes the quantitative and qualitative structure of arachnids, age-sex composition, seasonal and inter-annual dynamics. Arachnids were sampled with three general schemes: inhabitants of grass stand were collected using biocenometer (3 sampling plots (=locationID) in total), inhabitants of forest litter were collected using line-designed (8 plots) and matrix-designed pitfall trapping (1 plot). The dataset includes a 2004 census for topsoil macroinvertebrates of spruce-fir forests along a pollution gradient in the Central Urals. The dataset describes soil macrofauna’s abundance and community structure (list of supraspecific taxa, list of species for most abundant taxa, and taxa or species abundance) in areas differing with toxic metal (Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd) contamination levels from the Middle Ural Copper Smelter (heavily polluted, moderately polluted, and unpolluted areas). The dataset consists of 340 sampling events (= samples, corresponding to upper and lower layers of the soil monoliths), and 64 658 occurrences (abundance of invertebrate taxa per sample (soil layer), both present and absent). Arachnids, Carabids (adults), Elaterids (juveniles), Chilopods, Diplopods, Gastropods, Staphylinids (adults), and Lmbricids were identified to species level. In contrast, Mermithids, Enchytraeids, Lepidopteran larvae, Dipteran larvae, Hemipterans, Hymenopterans, and some other insects were identified to family or order levels. In total, 8 430 individuals of soil macroinvertebrates were collected in two soil layers (organic and organic-mineral horizons), including 1 046 Arachnids (spiders and harvestmen), 45 Carabids, 300 Elaterids, 529 Myriapods, 741 Gastropods, 437 Staphylinids, 623 Lumbricids, and 4 709 other invertebrates. The presence-absence data on each taxon is provided for each sampling event. The dataset contains information helpful for long-term ecotoxicological monitoring of forest ecosystems and contributes to studying soil macrofauna diversity in the Urals.

Information about the collection of bird egg clutches (Aves) stored in the Museum of the Institute of Plant and Animal Ecology of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Museum of IPAE) is presented. The data was obtained from nesting cards, and the information for each sample was georeferenced with an approximate accuracy of 1 km. Eggs of the nest parasite Cuculus canorus (Linnaeus, 1758) found in three clutches (IPAE0463276, IPAE0463277, IPAE0463281).
